Abstract
This article is the first half of the interview with Professor Joël Bellassen. In this part of the interview, Professor Joël Bellassen talked about why and how he himself learned Chinese, the distinctiveness of Chinese language from other languages, the "untranslatability" in translation, the proposal of "dualism" in Chinese teaching, the original purpose to compose the textbook "Enlightenment of Chinese Language and Characters" and the teaching philosophy behind it. His main views are as follows: (1) For Western learners, Chinese is "the language of the Moon", and its "distance" is the greatest intrinsic motivation for learning; (2) The statement "Chinese is difficult to learn" ignores the individual cognitive ability and motivation of the learner; (3) Learning Chinese and philosophy shares similar "meta-curiosity"; (4) In the primary stage of Chinese teaching, the uniqueness of the language should be prioritized so that learners would "take both words and characters into consideration". The higher level learners reach in learning Chinese, the more wordbased methods should be used in teaching them; (5) Teaching Chinese as a second language should be regarded as teaching a second written language; (6) The purpose of linguistics is language description and analysis, and the purpose of foreign language teaching is transformation; (7) In teaching Chinese, one should center on learners and always put in consideration the relationship between learning Chinese characters and memory; (8) The integration of Chinese and Western civilizations makes a whole.
